Sainsbury’s and Tesco should be able to thrive ‘side-by-side’ - they do in Barkingside, Essex

PUBLISHED: 15:53 22 November 2012

I LIVE in Whittlesey and am therefore interested in the ongoing ‘battle’ regarding the two supermarkets which hope to come here.

I feel that the support for each supermarket is split roughly equally and is not heavily weighted on the side of Sainsbury’s as we would be led to believe.

The writer in your letters (November 2) asks, when referring to two supermarkets trading side-by-side, where else in the country this exists.

I can think of at least two places where supermarkets are close together - Barkingside in Essex (Sainsbury’s and Tesco) and South Woodford (Waitrose and Sainsbury’s). Also, in March, both Tesco and Sainsbury’s are in the north of the town.

It is a misconception to think that a town can only support one supermarket, because that statement alone infers that everyone in that town is going to shop there. Wrong! We all want choice.

If we have Tesco and Sainsbury’s built here, I believe that they will both be very popular and that people in the surrounding areas such as Benwick, Thorney, Turves etc will converge here to do their shopping.

I hope the infighting will stop and that something sensible will be the outcome. They should work together for the sake of everyone in Whittlesey.
