See no wisdom in replacing traffic lights with roundabout in March town centre

I SEE no wisdom in replacing traffic lights in Broad Street, March, with a roundabout.

This junction is extremely busy with long tailbacks to the bridge and more tailbacks along Dartford Road and Station Road.

The lights are positive and drivers act by them. Roundabouts are dangerous and some drivers using them take risks with little, if any, regard to cars approaching from the right.

The traffic situation in March was accentuated years ago when the in-town superstore arrived. As suggested then, the town’s infrastructure is unsuitable.

Since then it has worsened considerably at Creek Road and Broad Street junctions and on the store access and egress areas.

Grays Lane is becoming a filter accessing Dartford Road, drivers, especially taxis, avoiding the traffic lights. The suggested eastern bypass would generally serve traffic headed for Ely and Cambridge whereas the existing Isle of Ely Way to the west of March would serve exactly the same purpose.

Considerably more houses planned for the north and west of March will add greatly to the town’s traffic problems. People will not walk to town, they will use their cars and add to the existing parking problem.

  • I agree with this and it will be better than traffic lights. March defiantly needs an eastern bypass because when the other one is shut march is at a stand still.
