HUNDREDS of people turned out to enjoy this year’s Ely Apple Festival, with the nation’s favourite fruit taking centre stage.
There was a range of competitions, stalls and demonstrations throughout the free festival, which took place on Palace Green, overlooked by the cathedral, on Saturday.
The annual festival has become East Anglia’s biggest celebration of the great British apple. This year it included apple and spoon racing, a longest apple peel competition, apple activities and goodies including apple sausages, juices, ciders and cookery demonstrations.
There was music and morris dancing, crafts and plenty of produce to try, including hot apple punch.
Visitors were also be able to watch a wood turning demonstration, while children enjoyed activities including story telling and an apple shy.
The event, staged by East Cambridgeshire District Council, was supported by juice producers Watergull Orchards, formerly of Sutton.
