Our search for the best businesses in Fenland begins again as we launch the 2014 Fenland Enterprise Business Awards.

The categories

Staff are the most important asset of any business. This category will find businesses that demonstrate strong commitment to staff and assess how employees benefit the business.

APPRENTICE OF THE YEAR (sponsored by Fenland District Council)

Applicants should demonstrate how they have exceeded expectations, how the apprenticeship has shaped their career, personal life, confidence and self-esteem and any obstacles the person has had to overcome.

GREEN AWARD (sponsored by Foster Renewable Energies)

This award recognises significant achievement in protecting or
improving the environment, major contribution to communities
without the expectation of direct commercial benefit, or both.

Open to businesses that actively promotes best practice and tourism within Fenland.

BUSINESS PERSON OF THE YEAR (sponsored by Leeds Day Solicitors)

Individuals may nominate
themselves or be nominated by their employers or colleagues. The
judges will be looking for a business owner, manager or employee who has made an outstanding contribution to the success or survival of
the company.

Open to any company of any size, including sole traders, that has been set up since January 1, 2013 (it does not have to be registered for VAT).

Open to any business employing 10 people or fewer. The judges will be looking for performance against a business plan and proven success in adapting to market movements.

For businesses operating within Fenland with 11 or more employees.

CUSTOMER SERVICE AWARD (sponsored by Larkfleet Group)

For any business that has outstanding customer service, backed up by nominations from the public.

RURAL ENTERPRISE AWARD (sponsored by Local Generation)

This category is open to any rural enterprise working within Fenland. The judges want to see technical success, good environmental practice and a willingness to embrace new technology.

PRIDE OF FENLAND AWARD (sponsored by Foster Property Developments)

A chance for each Fenland town to show how it is promoting business through enterprise, chambers and the town council. The winner is chosen by a public vote.

JUDGES’ AWARD (not directly entered)

Recognises an individual or company that has not won a category but the judges feel deserves special recognition.

BUSINESS OF THE YEAR (not directly entered) (sponsored by Whiting & Partners)

The winner of winners – chosen by the judges.

We are looking to build further on the massive success of the event which has been running since 2009.

This year, we have 13 awards up for grabs, 10 of which are open for entries. They will identify Fenland’s best small and medium businesses, environmentally-friendly initiatives and star employees.

The Apprentice Award – set up in memory of teenager Craig Bird who was killed in a car crash in 2010 – also returns. Craig, 18, of March, was an apprentice at the Fenland Engineering Skills Centre, at Metalcraft in Chatteris.

One new category this year is the Rural Enterprise Award, to recognise those who work in the farming and agriculture industries.

And once again YOU will decide which town is the Pride of Fenland and demonstrated the greatest entrepreneurial spirit during the last 12 months.

A ‘winner of winners’ will be chosen from the 11 category winners for the grand title of Business of the Year.

The award was won in 2009 by Fenland Leisure Products of Christchurch, in 2010 by Chatteris-based independent retailer James Graven & Sons, in 2012 by Foster Property Maintenance and 2011 and last year by Delamore Young Plants of Wisbech St Mary.

A Judges’ Award will also be presented to a business or individual who did not win a category but the judges feel deserves recognition.

The awards are run in association with Fenland District Council, a supporter of the awards since they were launched. The council also sponsors the Apprentice of the Year award.

Category sponsors for 2014 include Local Generation and Whiting & Partners, both of which have also supported the awards since 2009, Larkfleet Group, Foster Property Developments, Foster Renewable Energies and Leeds Day Solicitors.
