Arson tally now five in three days as Wisbech fire crews tackle shed, fence, car and tree blazes

Arsonists struck in three Wisbech streets during the early hours of Monday and continued into Tuesday and Wednesday by setting fire to a tree and to a car.

First call was to a fence and shed fire at 2.16am in Chase Street which was attended by one Wisbech crew.

“Firefighters arrived to find a fence and two sheds well alight,” said a Cambs fire spokesman. “They extinguished the fire using hose reels and returned to their station by 3.05am.

“The cause of the fire was deliberate.”

At 2.38am a crew was called to North Street to tackle another fire.

“Firefighters arrived to find a fire in the open and extinguished it using a hose reel,” said the spokesman. “They returned to their station by 3.25am.

“The cause of the fire was deliberate.”

The third call out came at 3.08am when a Wisbech crew was called to a fire in Sybil Road.

The spokesman said: “Firefighters arrived to find a fire in the open and extinguished it using a hose reel.

“They returned to their station by 4am. The cause of the fire was deliberate.”

The fourth call was on Tuesday night at around 11.40pm a crew from Wisbech was called to a car fire in Sandbank, Wisbech St Mary.

Two firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used a hose reel to extinguish it and returned to their station by 12.35am.

“The cause of the fire is believed to be deliberate,” said the spokesman.

Today, at 1.49am, two crews from Wisbech were called to a tree fire in Fenland Road, Wisbech.

A fire involving a motorbike had spread to 20 metres of conifer hedgerow and a large 6m by 8m shed.

Crews extinguished it using hose reels and returned to their stations by 3.15am.

Again the cause of the fire was recorded by Cambs fire as deliberate.
