Dr Rosemary Westwell rode into Heron Court in March, where her husband John has received care since 2006, in style last Thursday.

Mr Westwell, who was diagnosed with dementia 22 years ago, was celebrating his 68th birthday.

Dr Westwell has documented her husband’s battle with dementia in a book John, Dementia and Me and has campaigned tirelessly for people with dementia to receive more support from the NHS.

This is not the first time the author has gone the extra mile to surprise her husband on his birthday - last year she flew over the care home on a Cessna plane.

The Harley Davidson idea came about through a chance meeting in a music shop with bike shop owner Steve Mingay, of C&A Motorcycle Training in King’s Lynn.

Dr Westwell, of Witchford, said: “I had to borrow a leather jacket from my next door neighbour and got out some jeans I had not worn in years.

“It was absolutely fantastic. John was wheeled out and took no notice as usual but I think he, and the other residents, enjoyed being outside. The staff were buzzing too.”
