Cambs Fire welcomes new on-call recruits

Five new on-call firefighters have joined fire stations at Manea, Thorney, Whittlesey and Wisbech after completing training.

The latest group of on-call recruits passed out on Sunday (January 28) and are now serving their communities as firefighters around their work and home life.

Whittlesey Fire Station – Lab technician, Megan Price (25) has joined the on-call crew at Whittlesey Fire Station.

Thorney Fire Station - Jim Chittock (43) who runs his own building company, is now an on-call firefighter in Thorney.

Manea Fire Station - Jonathan Grieves (22), a blacksmith, has joined the on-call crew in Manea.

Wisbech Fire Station – Josh Cairns (30) a woodturner is now an on-call firefighter at Wisbech.

Group Commander Gary Mitchley, head of on-call at Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service (CFRS), said: “We’re delighted to welcome five new recruits to CFRS. Being an on-call firefighter is a challenging yet rewarding opportunity, and we wish them the very best as they start their journeys here in Cambridgeshire.

“Training is challenging, and these individuals have shown outstanding commitment and dedication not just to the fire service but to themselves and their communities. We rely on the commitment and continued support of on-call firefighters and their families and we would like to thank every one of them who continues to give up hours of their time to serve the community.

“On-call firefighters are trained professionals who respond to emergencies in their communities alongside their day-to-day lives. They may be at home, work or out and about when they receive a pager alert and straight away they must jump into action and get ready to deal with any incident.

“The new recruits are now on-call after completing three months of training at the Service’s training centre in Huntingdon and will now be joining crews at Whittlesey, Sawston, Thorney, Manea, and Wisbech.”

On-call firefighters have to be aged 18 and over, have a good level of all-round fitness and live or work within five minutes travelling time of an on-call fire station.
