A woman is appealing for help to work out the species of a rare looking moth found while she was gardening at her home in March.

Audrey Hindle went to the town library where staff thought it looked like an Emerald Moth (Hemithea aestivaria) which is found in the Palearctic region from Russia to Scandinavia.

In the British Isles it has been found in Scotland but is a rare sighting.

Mrs Hindle, of Elm Road, said: “I was gardening trying to get the weeds from under my apple trees when I saw it crawling along the ground.

“I picked it up inside a horse chestnut cone and carried it into my lobby and shut the door so I could get a photo.

It crawled up the wall and stayed there overnight but has since disappeared.

“I’ve never seen anything like it. I would love to know if it is an Emerald moth. If anyone can help it would be good to work out its identity.”

  • It's a Light Emerald, and fairly common, and flying now.

  • I have just been on UK moths.org. If the moth has a blood red tip on the fore wing, which sometimes extends in a line on the fore wing and hind wing it is a Light Emerald moth. Your photo doesen't show this however. But in all other respects it is exactly the same as the picture on the above site

  • If you don't get a response from readers you could always try the BBC's Springwatch programme. Just send the photo to them. They are bound to identify it. It certainly is a pretty moth. Good luck.
