A charity darts tournament will take place later this month in memory of a victim of one of Fenland’s most notorious roads.

Leslie George died when his car left the North Bank road in Whittlesey and crashed into the River Nene in March 2008.

To mark the sixth anniversary of his death, his sister Jayne and her husband Donald Cliffe have organised the Leslie George Memorial Charity Darts Tournament at the Ivy Leaf Club on March 23.

Proceeds from the night will go to improving the safety of Fenland’s roads.

Following the tireless efforts of the The Fenland Road Safety Campaign (Charlotte’s Way), Peterborough City Council installed a life-saving safety barrier on the North Bank in December 2013.

Since then, they have agreed to put rumble strips on the road, but campaigners are still pushing for an average speed camera system to be introduced.

They will continue to fundraise so that they can contribute to the cost of future road safety schemes.

Graham Chappell, founder of Charlotte’s Way, said: “The tournament will be in part a celebration of what our charity has been able to achieve and partly an affirmation of our determination to look forward, with hope, to what more can be achieved to help improve safety on Fenland’s roads.”

The Fenland Road Safety Campaign (Charlotte’s Way) was founded by Mr Chappell following the death of his friend Andy Walker’s daughter Charlotte along the Sixteen Foot in February 2008.

Nine-year-old Charlotte died when the car she was travelling in left the road and plunged into the water near Bedlam Bridge.

Registration must take place by 9.30am with the tournament starting at 10am. The winner will get £50 and a trophy.

Tickets are £5. For more information call Jayne on 07731 359757
