THE civil partner of the late veteran journalist David Self is organising a candle light garden party to raise funds for Macmillan Cancer Support, in memory of the openly gay writer and broadcaster.
Abdul Majid Jawad said this week: “I want to raise £1,000 for Macmillan, in thanks for the brilliant help they gave David when he was ill. They are extremely knowledgeable.”
David died in June 2008, after battling liver disease and cancer for some time.
The party will be held on June 23, at the home Abdul shared with David, at Coates Road in Eastrea. Tickets cost £5, including light refreshments. There will also be a raffle, and music.
Abdul, who has already sold around 70 tickets, hopes that a representative from the charity will attend the party, to talk to supporters about their work.
He added: “The event will run from 2.30pm to 8.30pm, so people can come and go throughout the day. People have already been very generous, and I hope to receive more draw prizes and sell even more tickets. I really hope the community will get involved, most people know someone who has been touched by cancer.”
