The College of West Anglia is waiting to start work on the multi-million redevelopment of the Isle campus in Wisbech.
It will create a new teaching centre, adding to the continuing investment in the campus and facilities for students.
The new project work will start this summer and it is hoped a planning application will be lodged with the planning authority next month.
Because of the phasing of this work the demolition of old buildings will begin in May/June 2014, while the building of a new car park at the rear of the campus and the start of the refurbishment and new building work will start in July.
In November 2013 the college received the news that it will receive £4.6m from the Government to fund a £5.5m project to build a new teaching centre with state-of-the-art teaching and IT facilities for a range of curriculum areas, including health and social care, hair and beauty and uniformed services.
The project, which should be completed by summer 2015, will also include a new main entrance and reception area and a complete refurbishment of the existing A and B buildings, with the expansion of the restaurant, social areas and learning resource centre.
The outline plans were also put on display at the campus’s open day the very same week.
The Government money will allow the college to cater for several hundred additional students and apprentices and this announcement marked a terrific 2013 for the Isle campus, which saw the completion of its new £7.2m technology centre and another £440,000 invested in new kitchens, changing rooms and carpentry area.
Principal David Pomfret said: “This is fantastic news for the college, Wisbech and the Fenland area.
“Following the completion of our new technology centre last April and further improvements in the summer, this funding will allow us to complete the transformation of the campus and provide some excellent educational and training facilities for Fenland.”
The new building project strengthens the status of the Isle campus and its opportunities to offer even more too potential students from Wisbech, March and across Fenland.
