EXCLUSIVE: Now a second Tory walks out of ruling group on Fenland District Council to join the ranks of independents

A former chairman has become the second Conservative councillor in recent weeks to quit the ruling group on Fenland District Council.

Although he was not available today for comment, Councillor Bernard Keane has revealed his departure from the Conservative group by designating himself ‘independent’ on the council’s website.

Cllr Keane is thought to have visited Fenland Hall earlier this week to announce the switch and to ensure officers knew of his switched allegiance.

The veteran councillor faces, like all councillors, re-selection by his party and it is believed Cllr Keane feared he may not be given the option by the Conservatives to fight his March East seat.

Cllr Keane will now join former Conservative Peter Tunley on the independent benches. Cllr Tunley quit recently after disagreement with senior councillors over the future of Estover playing fields.

Cllr Keane has served as mayor of March and is also the current town crier.

  • I think its about time this councillor should stand down completely and let some younger blood into the fold and inject some energy for this town, its all very well attending numerous councilsgroups but you need to do something whilst your there!

  • More independents has to be good for Fenland, the dilution of the political cartel has been good for the area and this should continue with that progress - fewer decisions made outside of committees, a little less back-scratching.

  • Well another one more jumping ship they certainly dont like competion over the years he has take a free ride on these committees lets get somone whom speaks for the town indepentents have no clout so just retire and say bye bye
