A special flag will be raised at Fenland Hall, March, on March 10 as part of a nationwide celebration of Commonwealth Day.

Fenland District Council is to hold a short ceremony as part of the new “Fly a Flag for the Commonwealth” project, which seeks to demonstrate local communities’ commitment to the Commonwealth and its values.

Council chairman Ken Mayor will read out a specially written Commonwealth Affirmation and a message from the Queen before the flag is raised at 10am.

Similar events are being staged at the same time by local authorities all over the country.

Cllr Mayor said: “The Commonwealth is a true family of nations and a powerful influence for good in the world. We are proud to share in this unique celebration of all that it stands for.

“It is a concrete way of demonstrating our commitment to upholding the values of tolerance, understanding and respect for all people that is set out in its Charter.”

Charity teams will mark the day by taking Commonwealth Flags to the top of the UK’s four highest national peaks and raising funds for Cancer Research UK, Help for Heroes, Walking with the Wounded and Fields of Life.
