Martin Curtis who is complaining that the North Bank Road will be closed for several months

Councillor Martin Curtis, a Whittlesey district and county councillor, said he was “disappointed to find out about the closure of the North Bank Road a little late.”

He said this was a Peterborough City Council road “and I have been advised that there was little or no notification about the closure, which is to repair the bridge at the bend at the end.”

He added: “Certainly none of the Whittlesey councillors were given any formal notification and, as a result, were not able to make the case about the impact that a 22 week closure will have and, in particular, the chaos that is going to happen when school starts again.”

Cllr Curtis said he had asked some questions about the lack of consultation and “why councillors weren’t advised and also whether anything can be done to speed up the completion of the road works.”

Since 2004 five people have been killed in accidents on the North Bank.

A city council spokesman promised to investigate the criticisms made by Cllr Curtis.

  • The 22 weeks closure will be a considerable inconvenience to the many people who rely on this route to travel to and from P'boro. It could be time better spent if the chance was taken to re-lay and upgrade the 'Rumble-strip' , which was installed, unbelievably, only on the non-waterside carriageway, (apart from a very small stretch on the waterside), a few years ago, and is now becoming very worn, with the growing traffic volume on this narrow and notoriously dangerous road. For a very modest sum, probably in the region of £15,000, a 100 metre section of safety barrier could also be installed at the dangerous 'blind-bend' towards Northey Road, where fatal river-immersion accidents have happened, leading to the installation of 'slow down' warning signs, which flash when approaching vehicles exceed 50mph. It is surely only a matter of time before these signs prove insufficient as a safety measure at this dangerous location. Again, why not enhance the long-term benefits from this time of road closure by using it to install safety barriers at this location and giving proper protection against the risk of further river entry RTA fatalities here, for the price of a modest new car?

  • There was a public notice in the Peterborough Evening Telegraph on the 15th of July with all the details of the closure and a number to call if you had any questions I phoned the number on the 19th of July to complain that they were closing a major commuter route for so long and all they were worried about was were I got there number from when I said the public notice in the Evening Telegraph they were not impressed, and tried to cut me off, but they have not what I have seen said why so long. The council should do something because when the school go back it will be a nightmare they could do a free bus for the hours between 0730-900 and then from 1630=1830 the people from Whittlesey do put money into the city when working in the city. But hen the council won't because they are all take and no help. And why so long they can put a new bridge over the A14 in a weekend I have heard they are taking it down brick by brick and cleaning it with a toothbrush. Then the truth is the workers will spend most of day drinking tea and scratching there heads. If people complain to PCC they may speed it up but then I guess not.
