Four people were taken to hospital following a two car collision on a notorious stretch of the A1101 through Fenland.

The collision happened yesterday afternoon on the Sutton Road at Newton, outside of Wisbech and the road had to be closed for several hours to clear the debris and to remove spilt diesel.

A police spokesman said officers attended along with Cambs Fire and Rescue and the East of England ambulance service.

“Four people have been taken to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital at King’s Lynn; inquiries are ongoing.”

Police stayed at the scene to assist traffic flow whilst highways engineers cleared what was a described as a “large diesel spill.”

The police spokesman said the road only re-opened when the road was judged clean enough to avoid any further incidents.

A fire service spokesman said the collision happened just before 1pm.

“We arrived to find two vehicles had collided head on near Newton,” said a spokesman.
