Six final designs have been selected for the competition launched this summer.

People with creative vision were asked to design a flag for Cambridgeshire in the first competition of its kind.

Most counties across the UK have a traditional flag that can be flown at special occasions but organisers of the competition said that Cambridgeshire doesn’t have a flag or a symbol.

Andy Strangeways, who organised the flag design competition, said: “Yorkshire has the rose, Warwickshire has the bear, and Cambridgeshire has nothing.

“It’s extremely rare for a county to not have a flag so I thought it was high time it was sorted out.”

“In recent years the UK celebrated both the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and the London Olympics, two major flag waving occasions.

“Flags are an ancient art form, developed especially to clearly display allegiance and identity. They have subsequently become the premier medium for expressing social pride.

“Indeed it is difficult to imagine events as diverse as sports matches, military parades or musical festivals without a wide range of flags being flown.

“A flag for Cambridgeshire will be a free, public symbol for all to use that will raise recognition and awareness of Cambridgeshire, express the pride in our local community, and celebrate the heritage and culture of our corner of the country.”

Individuals, schools and other groups were invited to create suggestions.

An assessment panel have now chosen the final set of six designs to go to a public vote.

The winning flag will be registered in the Flag Institute’s UK Flag Registry.

Mr Strangeways said: “I am delighted to announce that the public vote for the Cambridgeshire Flag competition has now commenced and will close at 6pm on December 31.” Here’s the link to register your vote.
