The Wisbech branch of the Royal British Legion have sent a thankyou to everybody who made a First World War commemoration day a success.

People turned out to enjoy an afternoon of music and a service to remember the millions of people who lost their lives during the four year conflict.

Legion chairman William Durrant said: ” We had a good turn out from the general public and an enjoyable afternoon to remember the fallen.”

He sent a thankyou to everyone who made the day such a success including cadet forces, entertainment, Wisbech Town Council who helped fund the event and St Augustine’s Church whose congregation raffled a photograph for money towards the Poppy Appeal.

The Royal British Legion branch organised an afternoon of entertainment at the Wisbech park bandstand and a service of reflection led by Rev Alan Jesson, to mark the 100th anniversary of the outbreak of The Great War.

Branch vice-chairman Terry Van-Santen said: “I would like people to think of the millions and millions of young men who paid the ultimate sacrifice. Communities were devastated and families broken up during the war.

“We all owe them our respect.”

Entertainment came from Chatteris Town Band, the Clarkson Singers and Trumpeter John Barker.

At 4pm drums were used to form an altar for the service. Standards from branches across Cambridgeshire and Norfolk were also raised at the event
