A company that “demonstrated strong management with sustainable growth in a competitive market” won top honours at the fifth Fenland Enterprise Business Awards.
Delamore Young Plants, of Wisbech St Mary, won the Business of the Year accolade at Friday evening’s ceremony, held at the Braza Club in March and organised by the Cambs Times/Wisbech Standard in association with Fenland District Council.
Founded more than 50 years ago, Delamore specialises in the production of quality young plants. The company prides itself in offering superior products and customer service - this quality earned Delamore a Royal Warrant.
The company also collected the award for Employer of the Year and Delamore apprentice Helen Wright won the Apprentice of the Year award.
The judges praised Delamore for its “strong management with sustainable growth in a very competitive market”.
They also said: “Their plans are robust and measurable and showed how improved performance through good internal communications, together with effective training and development across all teams, can make a significant difference to the overall success of the business.
It was the second time that Delamore had won the Business of the Year crown. It previously won the title in 2011.
The Business of the Year award was sponsored by accountancy firm Whiting & Partners.
A capacity audience gathered for this year’s awards, including finalists, business leaders, council dignitaries and sponsors. They enjoyed a champagne reception before a three-course meal.
BBC Radio Cambridgeshire presenter Sue Dougan hosted the awards which, she said, “provide recognition for companies and individuals who are contributing to the business success, innovation, best practice and positive environmental impact in Fenland”.
The judging panel included a team of independent business leaders and award sponsors.
Lead judge Peter Watts said: “As in previous years, the quality of entries is commendable.
“The pride and passion demonstrated by the finalists for their businesses showed us just how fortunate we are to have so many gems in the Fens.
“Without Archant we would not be here to recognise the achievements of Fenland businesses. Thank you to Sarah Scott-Foster (Archant Herts & Cambs events and exhibitions manager) and her team for organising this wonderful event.”
