THE A1101 Fen road through the Hundred Foot Washes has been closed all week after flooding was recorded on Sunday.

The Environment Agency updates the relevant highways authorities whenever flood water rises above the level of a road. It is then their decision whether or not to keep the causeway open.

At 9am on Sunday the Agency advised Norfolk County Council Highways team that flood waters at the Ouse Washes had risen above the level of the Welney Causeway.

Adam Foster, a flood and coastal risk management advisor for the Environment Agency, said: “After we passed the message on, Nofolk County Council Highways Authority made the decision to close the road.

“A Flood Alert remains in place for the whole of the Ouse Washes area, known as the ‘Hundred Foot Washes’, and for now the road remains closed.”

There is substantial rain forecasted in the autumn and winter, and the Environment Agency will update the highways agency whenever flood water rises above the road.

The spokesman added: “We realise the disruption it causes when the road is closed, but it is our duty to inform the highways agency if there is a flood risk.

“Similarly, we immediately advise the Highways Authority when water recedes sufficiently enough to reopen the road.”

“We monitor water levels on the Ouse Washes through telemetry, taking measurements at Sutton Gault and Welney Causeway twice a day to update the Flood Alert that is in force.”
