A popular milkman will deliver his final round later this month after 23 years service during which he has never taken a day off sick.

Bob Brooks, a Dairy Crest milkman from March, will say goodbye to his loyal customers in Parson Drove, Gorefield, Guyhurn and Gedney Hill on August 26.

The 65 year-old grandfather started his milkman career 40 years ago before becoming a door-to-door baker, a newsagent shop owner and delivering newspapers to shops in the community.

But it was his love of being a milkman that encouraged him to become a franchise milkman in 1991.

Covering up to 70 miles a day, he has been delivering milk to those in Parson Drove and the surrounding villages since day one.

He has become more than a milkman to many of his customers, growing into a friend and helper.

Mr Brooks has found himself changing light bulbs and even posting Christmas cards for his customers.

He said: “For the past 23 years I have worked six days a week. I am now 65 and it’s time to put my feet up.

“I will really miss the banter and conversations with my customers. Some have even asked if I will consider staying but I’m going to enjoy spending more time with my family.

“My grandchildren are looking forward to it too, I allow them to get away with much more than their parents.”

Jim Maskell, depot manager at Wisbech, said: “Bob will be missed by all his workmates and customers. He has always had time for a chat with them and to also help with any little things they needed done.

“Bob could always be relied on. He turned up at the same time each day come rain or snow. He’s never even taken a day off sick. We wish him well for the future.”
