Archant

Nearly 30 people of all ages turned out last Tuesday to sow a giant carpet of poppies and other wild flowers across more than an acre of ground by the Boathouse in Wisbech.

It was the largest single sowing carried out in Fenland as part of the Royal British Legion’s nationwide campaign marking this year’s centenary of the outbreak of the First World War.

Two members of the Legion - Terry Van-Santen and Bryan Jones – joined volunteers from Wisbech In Bloom and Street Pride, residents and councillors to scatter the seeds.

Families lending a hand included Phil Doughty and his two children, Chanelle and Reece, and Denise and Malcolm Thomas and their grandchildren, Thomas and Jake.

Over the past two weeks Fenland District Council has organised a series of sowings that should lead to thousands of flowers springing up across the district this summer.
