Pupils were challenged to design a device that could protect an egg dropped from a cherry picker ... and they passed the test with flying colours.

Children at Westwood Junior School in March made packaging for the eggs so they could survive the 40 ft drop.

Of the 12 eggs which were dropped by head teacher Gill Thomas, 11 remained intact.

Organiser Nia Talbot said: “The pupils have been investigating packaging and were asked to make their own packages for the challenge.

“The caretaker’s brother lent us a cherry picker and, as it was her birthday, the head teacher went up in it to drop the eggs.

“The pupils loved it. They had a really good afternoon and it was nice to do something a bit different.
