A GOLD chain was recovered by police today in a dawn raid at the home of a man being held on remand on five counts of attempted murder.

Seven police officers and a police dog unit took part in an 8am briefing at Wisbech police station and then followed it up with a 9am raid at the home of Joseph Upton and his family in Murrow Lane, Murrow.

Police arrived at Upton’s home to find the gates open but nobody there. They were greeted by a ‘welcoming’ sign on the gate which jokingly declared: “Trespassers will be shot! Survivors will be shot again!”

Police say the raid had initially been put together to follow up reports of drugs being there but after an extensive search they declared the site clean.

Sgt Matt Swash, who led today’s warrant, said: “We didn’t find any drugs but we found a gold belcher chain which may help us with our investigation into the shooting.”

He said when police had last visited the site in November in connection with the shooting incident “we stumbled upon cannabis being grown on a plot.” There was no evidence or proof of that today.

A 60-minute search failed to find any cannabis or evidence of cultivation but did uncover a gold belcher chain. It was taken by police for further examination.

Upton, 38, is charged with five counts of attempted murder in connection with the shooting incident on the A47, between Guyhirn and Wisbech, in the early hours of November 19. He is due to appear at Cambridge Crown Court next month.

He was being held at Peterborough Prison but has since been moved to another Category A jail.
