DRIVERS who travel the wrong way down a one-way street in Wisbech have been facing police fines - but the road’s new no entry sign is hidden from motorists by low-hanging tree branches.

Police have been battling to remind drivers Park Avenue, Henry Street and St Augustine’s Road turned one way in January and recently resorted to issuing a warning offending motorists could face fines.

But a closer look at the junction shows the no entry sign completely hidden from view by tree branches.

A photograph from earlier in the year has the sign in clear view but summer seems to have rectified that.

Last month Inspector Robin Sissons said: “These roads have been two way for many years and people have been assuming it still is.

“So far, we have been informing drivers and not issuing tickets but we will now be starting enforcement work and issuing fines if appropriate.”

A spokesman for the police said today: “We will contact the council in relation to the obscured sign in order to ensure the safety of road users.”

Cambridgeshire County Council is responsible for maintaining highways.

A spokesman said; “Thank you for bringing this to our attention. We will investigate and carry out any removal action as quickly as possible.”
