SWIFT and effective action is being taken to ensure that a primary school improves, according to government inspectors.

Ofsted inspectors visited Beaupre Primary School, in Outwell, in October and found that improvement was required. Although the behaviour and safety of pupils was rated good, pupils’ achievement, the quality of teaching and the leadership and management were criticised.

Achievement was branded “inconsistent” and “not as high as it should be” while inspectors also stated that the “pace of school improvement in recent years has been too slow”.

But, after a monitoring visit in December, Ofsted inspector Paul Brooker has declared that strong progress is being made.

In his report, Mr Brooker says: “Senior leaders and governors are taking swift and effective action to tackle the areas requiring improvement identified at the recent section 5 inspection.”

Since the October inspection, one member of staff has left the school and a newly-qualified teacher has taken up the post teaching the Year 1 class. A senior teacher has also been appointed “assistant headteacher”.

Four new governors have been appointed and “with the exception of one unfilled parent governor vacancy, the governing body is at full capacity for the first time in several years”.

Mr Brooker hailed the work of headteacher Owen Rhodes.

“Since his arrival in September, the headteacher has led and managed the school very well, and has provided a clear evaluation of the school’s strengths and priorities for improvement,” he said.

“The findings of the recent inspection therefore came as no surprise to governors or staff.”

There was also praise for the governors, the school’s “raising achievement plan” and the local authority support which was described as “timely, well focused and of high quality”.

Ofsted will continue to monitor the school until its next full inspection.
