There will be a Jack Sparrow impersonator, fairground rides and more when a shopping centre puts on a free pirate themed fun day later this month.

Between 10am-2pm on Wednesday, August 20, Wisbech’s Horsefair Shopping Centre will host a vast range of pirate themed activities including face painting, balloon modelling, a fairground ride and a Punch and Judy show.

There will also be prizes for every child that manages to find and count all the pirate gold coins hidden in shop windows.

A guest appearance is promised from Captain Jack Sparrow impersonator Darren Potter, who will judge the children’s fancy dress competition at noon.

Captain Jack will meet shoppers and pose for photos throughout the day.

Some of the Horsefair shops will also join in with their own pirate fun and children’s competitions.

Horsefair centre manager Kevin Smith said: “We’ve got a lot planned and the great thing is that practically all of the activities are free.

“I can’t wait to see lots of pirates dressed up and making their way through the centre on the day.”

I have read with interest and a little envy, the good news about the huge expansion plans for Wisbech and the creation of a ‘development corporation’ for the town.

The silence is deafening. In vain I have looked for the past two to three weeks for any reference to the Sainsbury’s debacle.

A Wisbech man and former Irish guardsman who lost a limb in Afghanistan seven years ago, is celebrating after being part of the first all-amputee team to row the Atlantic.

Included in this ‘new vision’ was a fantasy 10 point guide outlining the impact of the plan on the wider community. Here is a more realistic 10 point guide on the impact of the plan.
