Driver's lucky escape after collision at Boots Bridge

Archant

ANOTHER Fenland bridge was damaged in an accident last night – this time along the Sixteen Foot Bank at Boots Bridge between Manea and Wimblington.

Two vehicles involved, one, a large 4x4MPV which showed signs of frontal impact and was left stationary on the junction.

The other, a silver hatchback, ended up lodged in the railings adjacent to the stone/concrete parapet, on the North East (Upwell) side of the bridge

Passers by said the driver was very lucky as the car could easily have gone through the railings and into the river had it been travelling any faster on impact.

An ambulance attended to at least one casualty. Police and others on the scene managed to guide traffic around the accident scene, without having to close the road.

The accident happened at 5.45pm and the driver of the hatchback was reported to be shaken but not seriously hurt. Police arrived at the scene after 6pm to take statements.

Road safety campaigner Graham Chappell took the aftermath photos of the accident.

“Both vehicles involved in the crash had been removed, so I was only able to photograph the debris left, and damage caused to the railings and footings adjacent to the bridge,” he said.

“The dislocated concrete footing is clearly visible, as is the damage to an upper railing section, and dislocation of a lower railing section, by the collision.“

  • What is the problem at this junction and others like it? I'll tell you. Its impatience and lack of attention. Its not hard to negotiate these junctions follow these tips!. 1.STOP at white line (before it not after) 2.LOOK RIGHT (cars are nearer to you!) 3.LOOK LEFT REPEAT STEPS 2 AND 3 (a couple of times, your not in that much of a hurry are you?) PROCEDE WHEN ITS CLEAR!!! Not that hard really is it.
