A nine year old schoolboy was crowned speed stack champion in Denmark when he won his age category for the popular craze.

Cieran Brown and his Dad Sean travelled to Denmark to watch the European Speed Stacks championships, where competitors have to stack and unstack cups in the quickest time, with no intention of getting involved.

However, once they got there the Westwood Junior pupil decided to give it a go and enrolled himself as a contestant.

His decision paid off and his speed stack skills earnt him top place for his age category.

The time he achieved went on to earn him overall sixth place out of 50 contestants in an event where he was the only English person taking part.

Mum Jody Stacey said: “He came across speed stack at YPM about a year ago and found he was quite good at it.

“He’s quite competitive and is ever so patient so kept practising and when he found out about the event in Denmark asked if he could go.

“He loves a challenge, anything that gets his brain ticking, we’re so pleased for him.”

Since returning from the contest last month a speed stack club has been formed at Westwood Junior School.

Speed stacks started in America in the late 90s and has developed into something that teachers recognise helps improve hand-eye coordination, speed and ambidexterity.

A study at the University of Wisconsin-Lacrosse, claims that stacking improves hand-eye coordination and reaction time by up to 30 percent and improves the side of the right side of the brain which deals with awareness, focus, creativity and rhythm.

  • Well done Cieran !!! My Son Daniel is also in the Speed Stacks Club at Westwood and really enjoys it. It has improved his concentration and he is enjoying being part of a team. Hope the boys go on to win more medals.
