Party goers may be charged to get into the event arena at the March summer festival if an idea at a recent meeting is given the go ahead.

The committee which organises the weekend festival is looking at the idea as a way of bringing in extra money to help stage the popular community event.

Other revenue raising ideas include a special sponsors evening in a bid to encourage local business people to dig deep.

The festival is into its 15th year and budgets are beginning to become “financially strained”, according to a report, with “strenuous efforts being made to secure additional sponsorship or face the prospect of a disappearing reserve situation.”

“If we overspend in 2014 to the same extent that occurred during 2013, our reserve would be wiped out and we would be facing a shortfall,” said a report published recently.

An open night has been arranged for possible sponsors taking place at March Library on Thursday February 13 between 4.30pm and 7pm.

The 2014 event will have a theme of The Movies and will take place from June 6 to 8.

Already an Elvis tribute act has been booked for Saturday night.

In the meantime a grant request for £5,000 from the Cambridgeshire Community Foundation has been unsuccessful because the committee is not a charity, however March Town Council has stepped up to the money pot mark by increasing their funding this year from £5,000 to £7,500.

Other money saving ideas include plans to get quotes from other first aid providers after receiving a quote for almost double last year’s cost.

The British Red Cross, who usually attend, said their bill would increase from £544.50 plus VAT to £1,261 plus VAT for 2014.

The committee agreed to look at getting quotes from the local branch of the St. Johns Ambulance and 2Train as an alternative.
