The scammers, who call themselves the ‘Nottingham Knockers’, claim to be part of a Government sponsored ex-offenders scheme.

This however is false as there is no such scheme.

Reports of the scam have also emerged from Essex and Nottinghamshire and Mr Barclay, MP for North East Cambridgeshire, is particularly concerned at the impact the scam may have Cambridgeshire’s elderly.

He said: “I am very concerned to hear that vulnerable constituents are being targeted.

“I am in contact with the police about this and would advise constituents to be extra vigilant, and look out for any vulnerable relatives or neighbours.”

Mr Barclay has contacted Inspector Robin Sissons and Investigation Officer David Murphy at Cambridgeshire Police to warn them of the situation.
