The principal of a Fenland academy says it is doing all it can to promote sport to its students.

Neale-Wade principal Jason Wing, in a blog on the school’s website, responded to criticism of state sector head teachers by the chief inspector of Ofsted Sir Michael Wilshaw.

In the report Going the extra mile: Excellence in competitive school sport, which was commissioned after the London games, Mr Wilshaw said head teachers need to stop treating competitive sport as an “optional extra” and too many top athletes are from private schools.

Mr Wing, who was part of the British Bobsleigh team at the Winter Olympics in Norway in 1994, said: “Mr Wilshaw talked about the lack of competitive sporting opportunities for children in state secondary schools in England. He suggested that more could be done to promote competitive activities.

“Whilst I am always looking at ways of improving our provision I am confident that we are in a strong position at Neale-Wade with regard to competitive sport.

“We have appointed three new PE teachers for September, including a new head of PE, and I am confident that this injection of new staff will help to build upon our current strengths.”
