Nene Quay Wisbech, flood defence work.

MOTORISTS have been warned of possible disruption when the latest phase of the Wisbech flood wall reconstruction work starts on February 24.

Work on the Wisbech flood defences means the Nene Quay is now one way, from Freedom Bridge to the Town Bridge.

Nene Quay will be closed to all vehicles from 9pm on February 24, with the closure expected to last about 16 days.

A Cambridgeshire County Council spokesman said: “The existing river wall and cantilever road, which date from the 1930s, no longer meet modern engineering standards and the flood wall is considered to be too low for predicted future flood levels.”

The latest work will involve the installation of steel sheet piles to strengthen the retaining wall that supports the Nene Quay river bank and the road above.

Diversions will be in place. Northbound traffic will be routed via Old Market and southbound vehicles via Churchill Road and the A47 bypass to avoid other roadworks in Wisbech.

Traffic marshals will be on hand during the closure to assist with parking and deliveries.
