Packing a punch for positivity in a new boxing club at Pinnacle House in Wisbech

A couple are working flat-out to create a showpiece boxing venue in a two-storey warehouse as a positive training venue for the community of Wisbech.
Saphire and Buddy Lee, who have ran the Wisbech Amateur Boxing Club since the early 1970s, are moving the gym equipment to the new premises from Nene Quay to Pinnacle House, on the edge of the Waterlees estate.
They grabbed the chance of a new 13,000 sq feet building after we featured the story in this newspaper calling for a sporting group or charity to take it on before the owner pulled it down as he cold no longer justify paying rates on a building that had stood empty for two years.
Former professional boxing manager Mr Lee, said: “The building is in fantastic condition. It’s huge. It’s exciting. It’s all about helping the community. We want to provide opportunities for as many people as people as possible to use this gym, to benefit from the facilities to give the community here something to do, to get kids off the streets.
“We currently have about 30 members but in this new club we could have hundreds.”
To help achieve their vision they are looking for coaching help and are running a coaching course on August 2 and 3 and 9 and 10 for anyone who is interested in becoming an assistant coach to help boost the club.
Mr Lee said: “We hope to get classes every night from young kids up to adults. We really want to put on boxing shows in the upstairs room. It’s a lovely room to have dinner shows. It’s about time Wisbech had something like this.”
An open day is being held on Saturday August 23 from noon to 5. There will be boxing demonstrations, face painting, refreshments and stalls and is open to the everyone to go along and see what the club is about.
