Police dish out £200 fines during crackdown on illegal use of workforce vehicles in Wisbech

MOTORISTS were caught using mobile phones, running red lights and driving without insurance as police cracked down on the illegal use of workforce vehicles in Wisbech.

Twenty vehicles were stopped by police and partner agencies during Tuesday’s operation in Lynn Road, Colville Road, Clarkson Avenue and Mount Pleasant Road, while 57 offences were identified.

Eight motorists were issued with prohibition notices and 17 offences were reported, including failing to maintain proper tachograph records, no tax and failure to keep records of work.

Three fixed penalty notices were issued for tachograph offences and failing to ensure proper use of recording equipment.

Three fixed penalty notices were issued for going through a red light, having no tax and using a mobile phone while driving.

Ten drivers were reported for summons for incorrect type of MOT, no operator’s license, no tachograph, failure to keep records of work, no insurance, vehicle in a dangerous condition, defective tyres, failure to wear a seat belt and using a mobile phone while driving.

The Gangmasters Association (GLA) served 16 enforcement notices for licensing offences.

Sgt Gary Williams said: “This operation sent a firm message to employers, with some on-the-spot £200 fines being issued.

“It was a huge success with each agency utilising their area of expertise to full effect, working together to make the roads and the public safe.

“There was a visible police presence in the area throughout the day, which can also help deter crime and anti-social behaviour.”
