Police claim the off-licence is fuelling street drinking.

POLICE are calling for a shop to have its premises licence reviewed because they claim it generates anti-social behaviour in Wisbech.

A report to councillors says that Wisbech Off Licence, in Nene Quay, is “supporting street drinking by selling single cans of chilled high strength lager and is adding to anti-social behaviour”.

It adds that non duty-paid cigarettes have been found on the premises, along with tobacco which was believed to have been counterfeit.

Police also state that they have found people loitering outside the shop drinking alcohol.

Sgt Dave Bax, licensing officer for Fenland, said: “The premises is situated on Nene Quay, which is a main route into Wisbech.

“There is an area at the side of the shop used for street drinking and littering and locations near the shop are suffering from street drinking and anti-social behaviour.”

Officers say many of the street drinking problems they deal with in Wisbech occur in areas around the shop.

But lawyers acting for the premises licence holder, Zagros Abdullah, have told Fenland District Council that the application for a licence review is “unnecessary and disproportionate”.

The council’s licensing committee meet on Monday to discuss the application.
