Spring into Summer Day Two: Why I fell down the stairs, drank green tea, and tried to abandon coffee after 2pm

Day two and a 7.30am email from Tim Megginson assuring me that the pain from yesterday is likely only to be temporary. Re assurance indeed!

Happily the greater part of me is eagerly anticipating tomorrow’s 6.15am start at Ely rugby club for the second ‘boot camp’ experience and whilst the mind may be willing what of the body?

I re read Tim’s promise that “you will feel much better after tomorrow’s session” just after arriving at my desk, which was not as straightforward as I have come to expect.

Fifteen steps separate the ground floor from our first floor office but after three steps I fell backwards and had to start again. The aches and pains in parts of the body not tempted by exercise in recent years would be laughable if happening to others but not so funny if it’s you experiencing them.

Still if nothing else it’s got me thinking seriously about health and fitness and I sense a ‘respect agenda’ evolving from those friends and family members who doubted I would even begin this month long adventure.

The body shape fitness manual provided by Tim points out that four fifths of those signing up to it are addicted to coffee and curtailing such excess of caffeine is part of the programme.

No coffee after 2pm and no more than two cups a day have seen me switch to the recommended green tea which has not been as uncomfortable as I first thought.

It’s noon and I’m feeling the pangs of hunger and have not yet established daily menus that fit the programme but it’s work in progress.

Indeed work in progress seems a reasonable mantra to adopt for the rest of the day as the Spring into Summer campaign moves gently on.
