Three teenagers who volunteer to help their school library are among the latest entries in a competition that hails the achievements of young people in Cambridgeshire.

Lily Andrew-Martin, Owen David and Daniel Flack, all 13, who go to Sir Harry Smith Community College, Whittlesey, have booked a place in the Linx Young People of the Year awards or the ‘YOPEYs’ ¬ Oscars for young people who give to others.

The three were nominated by Jennifer Timms, library manager at the school, who thinks others should take a leaf out of their books.

“They all give up their break and dinner times to help in the school library every school day,” she said. “They are committed.”

All three help younger pupils joining from primary schools. They take them on tours of the school and lead sessions in the library.

And they compiled a booklet to introduce newcomers to the school and work on a twice-termly newsletter.

Lily, of Stonald Avenue, said: “I help the youngsters with their homework.

It’s nice for them to understand their work and be proud of what they have done.”

Daniel, of Oxford Gardens, enjoys his role as a cyber mentor.

“I have dealt with five people online. There have been successful results and I’m glad I was able to help,” he said.

Owen, who lives next door in Oxford Gardens, said that although he likes to play football sometimes he also likes to help in the library.

“It gives me a chance to get to know other pupils in school and to help them,” he said.

Do you know somebody who deserves the title Young Person of the Year?
