Tesco to create space for a 24/7 gym including Zumba classes, kick boxing and yoga at newly opened Wisbech store

Keep fit enthusiasts will soon have 24/7 access to a gym in Wisbech if approval is given to Tesco Extra to use part of its Cromwell Road store.

The gym will be run by 24/7 Fitness, which has five clubs nationwide and promises membership fees as low as £17.95 a month.

A Tesco spokesman said: “As part of our plans to make our Wisbech store an even better retail destination for our customers we are looking to open a gym alongside our shop later this year.

“Our store will be staying the same size so our customers will still be able to get everything they need. Having a gym alongside the Tesco store means our customers will be able to fit in exercise at a time that suits them.”

Tesco said they set aside the space for a gym before the store opened.

The company running the gym, 24/7 Fitness, said: “We don’t have swimming pools, Jacuzzis and other expensive add ons, which allows us to pass the savings on to you,” says the company.

“What we do have are fantastic gym facilities, great studio classes, unlimited access, and friendly staff.”

The company is recruiting for its new outlet and plan to open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

Personal trainers will also be on duty within the gym that will create 20 full-time and 20 part-time jobs.

Tesco says they reducing the sizes of its largest hypermarket-sized stores.

“As a consequence it has decided to operate a slightly smaller store from the former Wisbech stadium site than was originally granted planning permission,” says a design statement by Tesco’s planning consultants.

Tesco says the decision to operate a smaller store was made known last summer when it submitted amendments to Fenland District Council.

The company says the gym will also cater for 40 classes including body combat, kickboxing, yoga, spinning, Zumba and circuits.

“Our research has noted that Wisbech lacks health and fitness centres,” said the design statement.
