There was momentary chaos in Wisbech when the 10.44 X1 departure to Peterborough got stuck .

With ongoing roadworks meaning Nene Quay was open in one direction, the bus followed the signed route via Market Place but was thwarted by the sharp right turn from Hill Street into Union Street.

The bus had to reverse all the way back up Hill Street to escape.

The incident has got people talking on the Wisbech Pictures Old and New Facebook page.

One poster, John Horsepole, said: “Surely common sense says the Market Place and Hill Street are to small for a double decker... surely you would go Churchill Road then up Weasenham Lane or in reverse if coming from Peterborough.”

Bus blogger Gerard Fletcher summed up the mishap by noting that “the 10.44 departure tried the signed route via Market Place but was thwarted by the sharp right turn from Hill Street into Union Street as shown here :

“Whoops ! The bus had to reverse all the way back up Hill Street to escape. One imagines the little lad in the photo asking his dad if he can go for an exciting trip on the X1 soon !”

  • I agree with the Wanderer, some people like to make "mountains out of mole hills". I feel so sorry for the driver.

  • Stuart, why would the bus driver need to check on safety of passengers, this would have been a very low speed manoevure with no danger to passengers whatsoever? If your daughter is panicked that much by such a minor incident, you might not want to let her travel alone on a bus that does full speed along A roads for most of its journey - now with the way a lot of car drivers behave on the A47, *thats* something to *actually* worry about. In fact the whole thing's a non-story, the bus went the wrong way and the driver backed out. Whats the big issue? Slow news day in Wisbech clearly!!

  • SPOOKY - the advert on the bus is for "Earth to Echo", a film about aliens, and in the photo there's clearly a flying saucer hovering over the bus! Extraterrestrial goings on in Wisbech methinks!

  • My daughter and her friends were on this bus and on the upper deck when it happened. Only sitting a few seats away. At no time did the bus driver or anyone after the incedent ask the kids if they were ok. Only interested in getting the bus back to the station. At no time was any thought given for the passangers. A letter to X on its way. My daughter does not want to go back on the bus again...!!

  • Some of the X1 drivers aren't very cheerful at the best of times - I bet this one wasn't too happy. I'm sure the other drivers won't mention it though lol
