Food demo causes stir at Wisbech Market

Shoppers from all works of life tucked into a special stir fry treat at Wisbech Market.

The stir fry was cooked as part of a demonstration for the healthy eating Smart Swaps campaign which highlights how food can be low fat and tasty.

Smarts Swaps encourages families to make easy food and drink swaps to reduce sugar and fat intake. For example, by swapping a daily 500 ml bottle of coke for a low sugar drink or water, a person could save nearly 20 bags of sugar a year.

The Smart Swaps is a national campaign by Public Health England and is supported by Cambridgeshire County Council locally.

The stall will be back again on Saturday January 25, with examples of healthy snack alternatives.

Ailsa Lyons, a Cambridgeshire County Council Health Improvement Specialist, said: “People will soon let you know if they don’t like something, but the stir fry got the thumbs up and was just the thing on a cold January day. It’s very healthy and shows that if something is low fat and low sugar it can also be bang on when it comes to flavour too.”

Dr Liz Robin, Cambridgeshire County Council’s Director for Public Health, said: “Making simple food swaps can really reduce sugar and fat intake. Over the long term this can have a real impact on a person’s health.”

At the stall advice will be on hand from health trainers from My Time Active who are working in partnership with the council.

Those who sign up to the Swapathon will receive a free Smart Swapper full of healthier swap and meal ideas, money off vouchers and fridge magnets as well as supportive emails and texts throughout the month.

A free Smart Recipes app will also be available with tasty, quick and healthier meal ideas, which can be downloaded from iTunes and GooglePlay.

People can also find healthy recipes on Wisbech community website with blogs being posted over the next few weeks.

County Councillor Tony Orgee, Cambridgeshire County Council Cabinet Member for Health and Wellbeing, said: “I fully support this campaign as health and wellbeing is a key priority for the County Council. I’d encourage everyone to have a go at Smart Swaps.”
