A gangland mobster, serving a life sentence at Whitemoor Prison, March, for murdering and then burying the body of his victim, has died.

Michael ‘Mickey’ Weldon, 62, died at Peterborough City Hospital on July 8, the coroner for NE Cambs William Morris said today.

Mr Morris revealed that he opened and adjourned the inquest into the death of Weldon last week.

“The cause of death is provisionally given as unascertained pending further investigation,” he said.

Weldon, of Worcestershire, had been told he must serve a minimum of 23 years when he was jailed at Birmingham Crown Court in 2008. His family told a Birmingham newspaper last week that Weldon had passed away after suffering a crippling stroke.

A family member told the newspaper that the killer remained in a coma following a brain haemorrhage.

In court Weldon had been described as “dark, sinister, ruthless and menacing” after being found guilty of the murder of a male model. The jury was told it was a case of mistaken identity but high on booze and cocaine he and some associates burst into the victim’s house, kidnapped him, beat him to death and then burnt his body.

It was two years later before the remains were found.

Mark Price, 41, was sentenced to a minimum of 15 years for the same offences, and others convicted of firearms and conspiracy offences.
