A town council has laid out its “strong objection” to a controversial proposed 150 home development on a Fenland flood plain.
Gladman Developments Ltd have applied to Fenland District Council to build on land north of Snowley Park and Glenfields in Whittlesey, with the decision expected to be made in August.
But Whittlesey Town Council are opposed to the development, which they claim could expose Whittlesey residents to a greater risk of flooding.
Their consultation response said: “Whittlesey Town Council listens to our residents and supports their continuing objections to any further development on land North of Whittlesey for valid reasons.
“Existing households are being placed at serious risk of flooding if development is permitted to continue on flood plains, lands naturally being used for water storage or in any designated flood zone category.”
Concerns were also raised about the potential for the development to cause travel chaos on Stonald Road, which is already described as a “rat-run”, and further afield.
The response said: “The B1040 between Whittlesey and The Dog in a Doublet was closed to all traffic for 65 days due to flooding and surface water between November 2012 and February 2013.
“This extension to Snowley Park Estate may contribute to a further 300 vehicles leading to the A605 and due to flooding closure of the B1040 creates the largest slow moving car park in Fenland during peak travelling times.”
Whittlesey Town Council says they have approved the building of 854 new homes since 2011, meaning they are well ahead of their Core Strategy target of 1,000 homes by 2031.
The response said: “Residents of Snowley Park and adjacent neighbours have genuine concerns and it’s not just a case of development not in my backyard syndrome.
“Whittlesey Town Council intends to leave a development legacy of lifetime homes. Our response is to raise strong objection to any further development on land north of Snowley Park and Glenfields.”
