A wind turbine in Whittlesey has been given the green light by a government planning inspector despite being turned down by Fenland planners.

The turbine at Wypemere Farm in Benwick Road is a 36.4 metre high hub with control unit on land north of the farm to provide electricity directly to the farm.

Fenland planners turned down the application in April last year, but following an appeal the turbine has now been given the go ahead.

The turbine will be situated in a landscape that is “open and flat wit fields divided by droves and drainage ditches.”

A report says that the turbine would introduce a relatively tall, moving man-made feature into the landscape .

However, a report by planing inspector Paul Griffiths, says :“Given the proximity of the railway line and the nearby presence of electricity pylons and telegraph poles and other wind turbines in the middle distance, the wind turbine proposed would not appear altogether incongruous.

“The significant degree of separation from other wind turbines present in the landscape would avoid any harmful cumulative impact.”

In addition the grand scale of the landscape and the wide prospects across it, mean that while the proposal would have some negative effect, the degree of harm would be “very limited.”
