Mrs E Bliss, 100 years old of Lyncroft Care Home Wisbech.

FAMILY and friends gathered to celebrate Guyhirn widow Liz Bliss’ 100th birthday yesterday.

Liz’s loved ones descended on Lyncroft Care Home in Wisbech to revel in her momentous day.

The eldest of ten children, she has lived and worked in Fenland all her life.

Gerald Pepper, Liz’s nephew, said: “The day went really well. There must have been 30 people there. She enjoyed the day and was thrilled to get a telegram from the Queen.”

Liz’s mother died when her youngest sister was a baby so she helped raise her brothers and sisters.

Gerald said: “She remembers taking her youngest sister to school in a horse and trap along the A47 to Wisbech.

“She worked on a farm and led a team of horses when they were harvesting potatoes and corn.”

Liz was married to local farmer Stanley Bliss and did not have children. She has lived alone since he died 30 years ago.

Gerald said: “She has always been an independent woman and drove a car until she was 90.

“She still can remember events from her life and likes to talk about how much things have changed in Fenland during her lifetime.”
