TWO men from Wisbech have gone on trial in Nottingham accused of murdering a 70 year-old man by allegedly pouring hot water over to force him to reveal where he had hidden his savings.

A jury has heard how Robert Holmes, 24, of Redmoor Lane, Wisbech and Rocky Curtis, 25, of Newbridge Lane, Wisbech, allegedly beat and tortured Sonny Grey before fleeing his home with cash and jewellery.

Evidence in the trial- expected to last a month-has included testimony from Mr Grey’s granddaughter who lives nearby and describes seeing after the attack in pain and with multiple cuts, bruises and blood on his face.

Both Holmes and Curtis deny the charge.

Nottingham Crown Court has also heard how Curtis and Holmes allegedly held one of Mr Grey’s fingers in boiling water.

Curtis’ brother Thomas, of Elm, was originally arrested in connection with the murder but committed suicide whilst being held at Norwich Prison.

Thomas Curtis had been jailed for armed robbery in 2006 but freed on licence after serving five years.

After being re-arrested for his alleged involvement in Mr Grey’s murder he was found hanged in his cell inside prison. He was later buried at Elm, not far from his home: five pick up trucks delivered floral tributes to the graveyard. They included a life size cash dispenses, a £20 note, a replica of tax exempt red diesel and a Post Office.
