A WOMAN in her 20s suffered a suspected serious spinal injury after the car she was driving left a Fenland road last night.

The car's doors were removed to help extricate the woman.

Firefighters and a Magpas Helimedix crew were called to the collision on the B1093 Whittlesey Road, Benwick, which happened shortly after 7pm yesterday. The car left the road and ended in a ditch.

A Magpas spokesman said: “A woman in her 20s was trapped in the car and suffered severe back pain, a suspected serious spinal injury and a numbness in her leg.

“When the Magpas team arrived, the woman was shivering with cold in the car, which was stuck at a 35 degree angle in the ditch.

“The fire service on scene then worked to remove the car doors and roof, whilst the Magpas Doctor and Paramedic administered pain killers and wrapped the woman in blankets.

“The Magpas team then sedated the patient, so that she could be removed from the car as safely and painlessly as possible - and to prevent any further damage to her spine.

“She was then escorted by Magpas to Peterborough City Hospital in a land ambulance, on arrival her condition was described as serious but stable.”

The Magpas Helimedix doctors who attended were Dr Fiona Bowles and volunteer paramedic Ash Richardson.

Firefighters from Ramsey and Dogsthorpe returned to their stations by 9pm.
