MANAGER Steve Appleby says Callum Reed will have to fight for his first-team place after the midfielder was given “one final chance” with Wisbech Town.

Reed left the Elgood’s Fenland Stadium under a cloud last August but he returned to training with the Fenmen last month.

Appleby said: “After a lot of consideration, I have decided to give Callum Reed one final chance with us.

“He came to me looking to return and has trained with us for the last few weeks. He has knuckled down and shown a different side to his character in that time and from speaking to him I know he is embarrassed and mortified by his behaviour.

“As a popular figure in the dressing room, the lads have welcomed him back, but Callum understands that he has a big fight on his hands for a place in the starting XI.

“We have missed his undoubted quality and what he brings to the team when he’s in top form.

“He will also have to win the fans over again and the best way to do that is put in good performances and let his football do the talking.

“Callum has been described as a ‘mercenary’ in the past, moving between clubs when offered more money, so it ought to be mentioned that he has returned for very little money and he will keep his head down and work hard.

“He really enjoys playing for Wisbech and just wants an opportunity to put the record straight.”

Appleby launched a surprise squad shake-up this week when he released Rogan McGeorge, Deakan Napier and top-scorer Dubi Ogbonna.

He has moved quickly in his bid to replace Ogbonna, putting in a seven-day approach for an “exciting young striker who is a proven goalscorer”.
