PARALYMPIC legend Jody Cundy’s glittering career is set to continue after he was named as one of 11 athletes chosen for the Sky Sports Scholarship Scheme.

Cundy, 33, has already enjoyed phenomenal success as a swimmer and a cyclist winning five Paralympic gold medals and 14 golds at major championships.

The Walpole St Andrew inspiration will gain funding for coaching, training and competition and mentoring support from Sky Sports News presenter John Paul Davis.

Cundy said on Twitter: “I’m proud to be supported by Sky Sports News as part of their scholarships scheme.

“It’s a really exciting programme to be part of. I can’t wait for my next warm weather camp.”

Huntingdon gymnast Louis Smith and swimming sensation Liam Tancock are amongst the sports stars to receive backing to help their dream of London 2012 success.

Cundy, awarded an MBE in 2009 for his services to disabled sports, believes the scheme will enable him to hone his track talents even further.

The 33-year-old said live on Sky Sports News: “With the support of Sky I can afford warm-weather training camps.

“I can go and enjoy the roads, feel safe, get away from those drivers who are maniacs and get some good miles in.

“I used to be a swimmer and swimming trunks didn’t really cost that much, it was just the travel to and from events around the country.

“Cycling adds up to a very expensive sport, so any help I can get is fantastic and having Sky behind me is brilliant.”

Fenland’s most decorated athlete holds the para-cycling world records for the flying 200m and kilo (1km time trial).

He was awarded the Freedom of Wisbech in 2010 in recognition of his remarkable personal journey from a disabled young boy to athletic superstar.
