TEENAGER Jack Friend made a dream debut yesterday as he wrote himself into the Wisbech Town record books... twice.

At just 16 years and eight days old, the striker became the youngest player to represent the Fenmen first team as they beat Thetford Town 4-1.

But, after coming on as a second-half substitute, Friend made a second bit of history by becoming Wisbech’s youngest goalscorer.

The youngster opened his Fenmen account in the 89th minute, curling a neat left-footed effort into the bottom corner.

The landmark goal sealed a fine day for Steve Appleby’s side at the Elgood’s Fenland Stadium.

The Fenmen faithful had to wait just two minutes to celebrate their first goal, as Chris Bacon converted Dubi Ogbonna’s centre.

But Appleby’s troops, who were downed 1-0 by struggling Felixstowe and Walton United last week, only got into their full flow after the break.

Neal Spafford doubled their lead in the 51st minute before, two minutes later, Bacon grabbed his second of the day with a powerful header.

The Fenmen bombarded the Thetford goal, with Deakan Napier’s pace creating havoc, but it was the visitors who grabbed a consolation in the 80th minute.

The stage was then set for Wisbech’s youngest star to end the day in style. Friend’s cool finish secured the points and gave the Fenmen fans a new name to cheer.

Wisbech, who sit second in the Thurlow Nunn Premier Division, travel to United Counties League leaders St Ives Town in the FA Vase on Saturday.
