March Town United lost 2-1 to Swaffham Town at the GER last night in a game marred by a serious injury to Hares midfielder David Jackson.

Midway through the first half, Jackson landed awkwardly and had to be helped off the pitch with an ankle injury.

At that stage, there was nothing in it between the two sides.

But, on 31 minutes, Swaffham took the lead in freak circumstances.

Hares keeper Dave Beeny came rushing out of his goal to clear the ball but it took a massive bobble and he hacked at thin air.

Beeny had to watch on as Swaffham striker Alex Vincent rolled the ball into an empty net.

March could have gone further behind but Beeny twice denied Vincent.

His first save, from a snap volley, was particularly impressive.

The Hares then had their first good chance of the game through Denny Escorcio, who used his pace to break the offside trap but his delicate lob over the onrushing Swaffham keeper drifted agonisingly wide.

Moments later, Dan Woods found himself free approaching the penalty area but he chose to pass instead of shoot and the ball was cleared.

Escorcio had the final chance of the half – the pacy striker ran on to Beeny’s long ball and lashed a first time half volley narrowly over the bar.

March deservedly equalised on 54 minutes through Ash Brand. Escorcio turned his defender in the box and shot across the face of goal, where Brand bundled home.

There was then an 11 minute stoppage while the Swaffham keeper received treatment for a finger he dislocated while attempting to stop the goal.

But he was unable to continue, so an outfield player took over in goal.

However, five minutes later, it was Swaffham who retook the lead. Joe Woods headed home Vincent’s inswinging corner.

March pressed forward in search of an equaliser but, despite their best efforts, they did not create any more clear-cut chances.

After four games, March are seventh in the Thurlow Nunn First Division with six points. They host Needham Market Reserves in the league on Saturday, 3pm kick off.
